“Prelude” (for left hand) Op.11 –
I wrote this work during a night downpour. I was in bed and I heard the pelting water, I glimpsed flashing lights, so I sat at the piano and I expressed my mood and the suggestions that scenery evoked in me. The character of this music is mesmerising and disturbing at the same time. The presence of chromatic sequences half-reveals melodic fragments that recall glimmers of light, always confined into darkness and never emerging. The unceasing rain inspired a finale that does not convey an actual closure: It ends without really ending.
